Here are the top United States road trip recommendations you must take at least once in your lifetime. (Not to be dramatic or anything, but these trips will totally change your life.)

Florida – Overseas Highway Miami to Key West

Do you long for palm trees, a tropical breeze, the sweet taste of pina colada on your tongue, and ocean water so turquoise it looks otherworldly? Try this 113-mile highway in Florida.

Stretching from US Route 1 to Florida Keys-Key West, this highway will take your breath away. Seriously. This road trip is so astonishing it doesn’t even feel real.

This Overseas Highway is called the “floating” highway because it feels like you’re floating magically on water.

While traveling, be sure to save some time for a snorkeling adventure in the coral reef. Explore the 400-year-old ancient artifacts revived from the Shipwreck Treasure Museum. Guzzle freezing Mermaid Lemonade at the famous Caribbean Club. (Fun fact: the club is voted “Best Sunset” view in all of Florida.)

On a personal note, I’ve always been a bit reluctant about visiting Florida. But when I moved to this tropical paradise at the age of 26 — following a lifetime as a city girl — I was honestly taken aback by how gorgeous this place is. With the ocean views and the nautical breeze, every single day feels like I’m on vacation.

(Now I know what Taylor Swift meant when she called Florida “one hell of a drug.”)

Alaska – George Parks Highway

Say you’re up for taking on crystalline, snow-capped mountains and arctic landscapes, check out Alaska’s George Parks Highway. While traveling this whimsical route — complete with Northern Lights and moose sightings — you’ll feel like you’ve stepped right inside a snow globe.

Make sure you bring a warm coat and some mittens while exploring some of the loveliest sights the continental US has to offer. Activity-wise, George Parks Highway offers everything from whitewater rafting amongst snowy mountains to camping destinations that reveal the inspiring Aurora Lights. Pro Tip: The best time to check out all Alaska has to offer is in colder months, so you can check out the Northern Lights.

North Carolina – Outer Banks Scenic Byway

Ever wanted to live inside a Nicholas Sparks novel? If so, look no further than North Carolina’s Outer Banks Scenic Byway. This deserted destination off Route 12 offers charming lighthouses, the freshest seafood, and stunning coastal retreats.

Get lost on the Outer Banks’ sandy beaches. Set sale on the bluest waters in the Atlantic. Grab a bite at the endless seafood shacks scattered throughout the OBX. Go whale watching in the dead of winter at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The Outer Banks Scenic Byway is an exquisite getaway for anyone looking for some peace and quiet. Stretching about 138 miles, this byway begins at Whalebone Junction, ending at Cedar Island Ferry Terminal.

West Coast – Pacific Coast Highway

Calling all California Dreamers out there! Be sure to explore the wonders of the Pacific Coast Highway. This route is made for those who dream of being swept away by the ocean views, dark green forests, and sea air.

This trip — which includes Washington, Oregon, and California — is considered one of the most beautiful highways in the world. With all its glittering beaches, clothing shops, and restaurants to explore, the Pacific Coast Highway is the adventure of a lifetime.

Washington – Cascade Loop

Following the PNW spirit, Washington’s Cascade Loop is another outstanding road trip option to check off your bucket list. This route begins in Seattle and ends in the picturesque town of Leavenworth.

Of course, Seattle is known for its cozy backdrop of rainy scenery and its thriving music scene, particularly in the grunge world. With that in mind, make sure you get a chance to attend the great variety of concerts and art festivals the city has to offer.

When passing through the Cascade Loop, you’ll also be able to catch exceptional views like the Tumwater Canyon, which is excellent for kayaking, fishing, and tubing on the river. Enjoy your water activities against a backdrop of the lushest green forests you’ll find in the country.

It’s been 10 years since I last traveled this route. Even though it’s been a decade, I still vividly remember the scents, sights, and culinary masterpieces because they stay with me to this day.
