It’s Time To Start Booking Your Family Summer Vacation — Yes, Already
Yes, it was just New Year’s, but summer’s already around the corner. If you’re planning a summer vacation, you might already feel behind. For families, summer travel is both an opportunity for connection outside of the school year … but also a daunting prospect to plan.

It might feel like the fate of your children’s happiness is resting on your ability to book a trip. How will they remember this summer? And how will you survive it? From planning for their different personality types to packing the snacks, there are so many details that go into the booking process.

But first the question: where should you go?

You might be embarking on a domestic road trip or an international adventure. You might be searching for a relaxing break from reality or an action-packed week of thrills. Your family might have a mix of personalities that want to do it all.

Ideally, the perfect family vacation blends adventure, relaxation, and, yes, culture — even if you have to drag the kids to a museum, it’s good for them, I promise. By doing things you all enjoy, dipping into everyone’s interests, and pushing yourselves out of your comfort zone, you might just create moments that become lasting memories. The key to a memorable vacation is in the details. It’s also in choosing the right location. You have to go somewhere that gives you this range of experiences. And since everyone is looking for the same versatile vacation, you’re going to want to book early.

For family travel, timing is everything. By securing your summer escape in advance you can hop on great deals, exclusive experiences, and snag your dream stays. You also get more time to plan those oh-so-important details.

To help you break down the steps to planning a family holiday, I swear by these travel tips:

First, define your vision: This step is for dreaming big. If you could have your dream family summer vacation, where would you go? What would you do? Hone in on the key components. Are you seeking cultural immersion, outdoor adventures, or serene beach vibes? Align your destination with your family’s vision.

Make a (realistic) budget: You are what you can afford. Maybe a Kardashian-style trip to Amangiri isn’t in your future, but by planning in advance, you can budget for something great. Make sure to consider accommodation, travel, meals, and activities — then leave some buffer for snacks, shopping, and surprises.

Consult the fam: Get the family involved in the planning process — at least at the beginning. You can sort out the details, but making the family feel included goes a long way to spark inspiration and make sure you’re not totally on the wrong track.

Be flexible: While planning is essential, no one wants to feel overscheduled. Leave room for spontaneity. Keep a day free to explore and find a vacation spot that boasts lots of opportunities to explore and visit local favorite spots.

If you need some ideas to spark inspiration and discover your summer vacation location, here are some family-favorite spots across the world to explore:

San Diego, California

San Diego is one of the happiest cities in America, and a quick trip will immediately illuminate why. This beach city is great for those seeking sun and relaxation, as well as those seeking culture or adventure. Try watersports on the beach and bike ride or snorkel through the legendary La Jolla Coves. Or eat your way through the city’s food scene, starting at Liberty Public Market. Don’t miss the spas and wellness spots that will leave you with a California glow. Plus, the famous San Diego Zoo is a can’t-miss attraction. Summer soaking up good vibes? Sounds pretty great to me.

Colorado Springs, Colorado

Colorado Springs is like an all-season playground for outdoor enthusiasts. If you’re the kind of family that goes on sunrise weekend hikes or runs a 5k before Thanksgiving, this is for you. From falconry lessons to canyon zip-line tours, the city will be heaven for the adventurous family. For the complete experience, stay at The Broadmoor, a luxurious basecamp spanning 5,000 acres. With options ranging from luxury hotel rooms to the Cloud Camp atop Cheyenne Mountain, it’s an idyllic retreat that blends comfort and adventure.

Costa Rica

This is a bucket list family trip. It’s a destination for those who dream of tropical family vacations and those who dream of exploring nature. You can tailor your stay at Costa Rica’s eco-focused properties, experiencing everything from rainforests to beaches. Go ziplining or do sunrise yoga and sound baths — the choice is yours.

Yosemite, California

Yosemite National Park is a natural wonder everyone should experience. Take in all that nature has to offer and create an unforgettable family experience. With waterfall hikes, sequoia groves, and challenging day hikes, it offers an awe-inspiring landscape for outdoor exploration. Experience the rustic charm of Curry Village in Yosemite Valley for a unique tent cabin experience or venture to Autocamp in Mariposa for fully equipped tents, cabins, and airstreams.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Cape Cod is perfect to mix your Nancy Meyers East Coastal Grandmother aesthetic with family fun. From Melville-esque whale-watching cruises (you can even visit the Melville museum and finally read Moby Dick) to shark conservancies, it’s a mix of education and excitement. Nothing like summer on the Cape for a family getaway.

Peru

Peru is a gorgeous landscape for complete cultural immersion. Visit the iconic Machu Picchu, the charming streets of Arequipa, and the fantastic food scene in Lima. Don’t leave without doing some shopping at local vendors — my pick: the unbeatable wool sweaters.

Edinburgh, Scotland

For a more unique take on family-friendly Euro summer, head to Scotland for history and haggis. Seriously, though, Edi is one of the coolest cities in the UK — with one of the best food scenes. SO, don’t be scared off by promises of blood pudding. Head to Scotland for a city steeped in history and culture, for a food-focused vacation. This is my personal favourite way to vacation.
